A lot of modern art is not realistic or beautiful. Artists want to show people a different way of seeing things. They want to say something about the world they live in. Modern paintings and sculptures disturb some people because they do not like or understand what the artist is trying to express. It ofter takes many years before an artist's work is accepted by the public. 

  Officer Sanders says he became ill for four days after he ate a sandwich at the restaurant. Palmer is the cook who made his sandwich. Sanders claims that Palmer purposely put very hot chili peppers in his sandwich to make him sick. He thinks he knows why she did this. A few months ago. Officer Sanders gave Palmer several parking tickets. Palmer was upset about the parking tickets. Now Sanders believes the cook is trying to get back at him. He thinks she wanted to make him sick because she was angry about the parking tickets.

  Today many women are athletes. They compete in the Olympics and they play professional sports too. That was not true many years ago. People thought women were too weak to play sports. They thought women might get hurt when they ran or jumped. Some women thought this idea was wrong. They worked hard to become athletes. One of the first professional women athletes was Babe Didrikson Zaharias.  

  To be successful, members of society need to know how others expect them to act. Let us take student life at a university as an example. When new students arrive, they do not yet know what their appropriate roles are. That is, they do not know what their roommates or teachers want them to do. To help them adapt an orientation program. They learn the expected behavior for college students.
