Parker Ranch in on the island of Hawaii. It is the biggest privately owned cattle ranch in the United States. The ranch was once open space used mostly by Hawaiian ducks. It became a ranch over a hundred years ago when the king of Hawaii was given a gift of five cows and a bull. The animals multiplied, and the king needed help in controlling them. He asked a friend, Mr. Parker, to oversee the animals. He did so, and the king signed over to him two acres of land for his own ranch.

When a photographer suggested she think about modeling, she didn't have money to create a portfolio. She pursued modeling as a way to raise money for tuition at her academic dreams went up in smoke. She always wanted to make a mark in life but she never expected it to be in modeling. She said that modeling was a good way to make money, but it was not her dream.

Scientists have wondered for years how the monarch can migrate two thousand miles from various points in North America to winter in California and Mexico. To complicate the mystery, due to the monarch's short life span, the butterfly who migrates in the fall is a different generation from the one who did it the year before. Therefore, it makes the journey home without the benefit of memory. One more puzzling aspect of this insect is that out of all the butterflies in the world, the monarch is the only type that migrates.

After visiting the Everglades in January for the first time, I got involved in studying it at a college in Buffalo, where I am a senior in environmental studies. The more I learned, the more I grew to love the area. I am now thinking of attending graduate school in environmental management at the University of Miami. Your article gave worldwide attention to this ecosystem on its last legs. Although it will be an uphill battle to save it, I am one individual who is ready to fight.
