A friend of mine runs a coffeehouse. For years, she didn't hire a staff because she was concerned that she didn't hire a staff because she was concerned that she couldn't afford to expand. Because she had to do every-thing herself, her service was rather slow. So she was los-ing a great deal of business because of her growing rep-utation ÇÙ being slow. One day she found the answer was obvious. She hired a few dids to speed up her ser-vice. To her great delight, her lines speeded up and her profits soared.

Had I noticed a couple of significant events, I might not have got into the water. I should have seen the schools of small fish breaking the surface, driven upward by preda-tors. Perhaps more critical was my failure to heed a story i've heard. Two fishermen had seen a large shark attack a sea lion, toss it about like a toy, then tear off its body before their eyes. But steady east wind had brought ideal surfing conditions. So, I headed for the beach. It was absolutely foolish.

A mother took her little son to a matinee at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. The little boy whispered during the performance, "Mother, why is that man in the orchestra threatening the woman on stage with his stick?" The mother explained that the man was not threatening her and that he conducted the orchestra. Then the boy asked again, "Well if he is not threaten-ing her, then why is she screaming so loudly?"

In a recent column, attorney John Niemand argued that it should be necessary for lawyers to volunteer a certain amount of their time to working for the poor. Mr. Niemand claims that with 750,000 lawyers in our coun-try donating a few hours a week, those who cannot afford a lawyer would be guaranteed justice. What is interest-ing about this argument is that Mr. Niemand spends win-ters in Florida and his summers in Maine. In both places, he has a luxurious home. How easy it must be to make these kinds of proposals when one is as rich as Mr. Niemand!
